Marseille- cultural guide
Whether into theater, opera or classical concerts, Marseille has plenty to offer all year long. Ticket prices vary greatly depending on what you want to see and temporary exhibitions are generally not included in the museums’ entrance fee.
The major venue for operas and operettas is the Opera of Marseille (2 rue Molière). It features, as expected, classical music and opera. Other music treats, such as pop and rock concerts may be savored at Le Dome (48 avenue de Saint-Just) or Palais des Sports (81 rue Raymond Teisseire).
Whether into modern or classical performances, dance events in Marseille take place at various venues that manage to cater to all tastes, but the Ballet National de Marseille performing at the Opera definitely stands out.
Theatrical performances usually take place at Théatre National de la Criée (30 quai de Rive Neuve). The program includes both contemporary and classical works and ticket prices are usually about 10€. Other hot spots for plays and theatres in Marseille are La Minoterie (9-11 rue d’Ozier) and Theatre Toursky (16 passage Leo Ferre).
When it comes to films, Marseille has a lot of cinemas, the most popular being UGC Capitole (134 La Canebiere). Arthouse cinemas in Marseille where films generally run in their original language and have subtitles, are Le Mirroir (Vieille Charite) and Les Varietes (37 rue Vincent Scotto).
All in all, culture is everywhere in Marseille and its abundance is a true delight.
